When I first encountered this beauty buzzword, I said “whaaaaa?” Did somebody think of typing “grey” but then think of “beige” halfway?
Turns out, that’s kind of what it is!
Greige is a combination of the words gray and beige, to describe a color that’s basically a mix of the two. The term isn’t only used for beauty and makeup, but for interior design and decoration – a quick Google search with the term “greige” and you’ll find a news article that talks all about the shade as the color that took over Pinterest in mid-2015, but do a bit of more searching and you’ll find XO Beauty Addict’s entry about how the greige lipstick trend rose to popularity near the end of 2014.
Being a late bloomer (haha), I tend to pick up trends that float around on the Internet, but never really get around to trying them for myself until months after, for a variety of reasons. However, I decided to take the plunge at giving greige a chance because of my sudden curiosity for the youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, Kylie.
..which is why I bought these two Colourpop lipsticks: the Lippie Stix in Tootsi, and the Ultra Matte Lip in Trap!
I purchased mine from Ms. Che of Maquillage PH (Facebook | Instagram). I love her online shop because it’s the only one I know that accepts pre-orders without the necessity to deposit a downpayment upon order, with payment only requiring to be sent a week before the package arrives. It takes a little longer to arrive, but it’s worth the wait because you know your orders are legit, and not to mention the prices are really the best I’ve seen so far.
Lippie Stix: We’ve made it easy for you – every Lippie Stix has a matching Lippie Pencil that was designed to match its partner perfectly. However, we’re not trying to be a bossy pants and tell you creative lovelies what to do. So, if you want to create an Ombre lip look or something, have fun mixing and matching & do your thang!
Ultra Matte Lip: Step 1: Make sure your lips are bare and dry! Step 2: Apply matching lip pencil for a precise and perfected application. Step 3: Apply Ultra Matte Lip with the applicator or your favorite lip brush. **For smoothest finish always exfoliate your lips first! This thin and lightweight formula glides onto the lips smoothly and leaves SUPER intense pigment-rich colour with a bold, ultra matte look. It’s very long wearing and completely kiss proof!
The Lippie Stix comes in a slim, plastic tube, with holographic print for the label name. The bottom of the tube is colored similarly to the shade of lipstick, which makes it convenient if you have multiple Lippie Stix stored in your stash. The shade name and type of formulation is on a sticker at the base.
The Ultra Matte Lip comes in the usual clear liquid lipstick tube, but with a silver twist cap. A portion of the top part of the product tube, under the screw-on portion is silver as well. Holographic print for the label name also adorns it. The shade name and the batch code is on a sticker at the base as well.
Lippie Stix in TOOTSI
Tootsi is described on Colourpop’s website as a cool-toned grey-beige in a matte finish – and that’s what it is. I was apprehensive at first that I would look like a corpse because of the grey tones, but it surprisingly looks pretty okay on me. I would probably pair this off with slightly smoked out eyes, or a sweep of bronzer to contour and to give my face an overall warmth to counterbalance the lips.
I like that the matte Lippie Stix are not your regular mattes that dry out lips. I would call their finish more of a semi-matte, which is fine by me. If you really like the fully dry mattes, then I would suggest you browse their line of Ultra Mattes!
Ultra Matte Lip in Trap
Trap is described as a dusty, greyed-out beige, which is quite accurate as well. On me, there is a touch of rosiness (is that a word?). In some lighting, it looks like a pale lavender! I would pair this with smokey eyes, or go full Kylie and add lush lashes, sharp contouring, and an intense gaze!
As with all liquid lipsticks, these are used best with prepped and moisturized lips. I suggest you exfoliate and moisturize them well. If you will use a lip balm, let it sit while you do the rest of your makeup before wiping off the excess just before you apply the liquid lipstick.
- The shades are quite true to their descriptions. (Though I suggest you take all online reviews and swatches with a grain of salt, as lighting and undertones vary among blogger photos.)
- Application of Tootsi is smooth, as with Trap.
- Trap applies on opaquely! (But be careful when layering, as it can flake.) Tootsi is not entirely opaque, so a second pass is recommended.
- Trap is waterproof – oil-based makeup removers are way to cleanly get this off! (So be careful when eating oily food, okay?)
- Good value for price. (I got Tootsi at below Php400, and Trap at below Php500.)
- Trap smells kind of oddly.
- Tootsi is supposed to have some sort of cake-like scent, but I don’t really like it. Luckily, it dissipates quickly after application.
Recently, I’ve got another Colourpop order in from Maquillage PH! I’ll still have to test it out and then make a proper review, so I hope you’ll watch out for that. 🙂
What other shades from Colourpop should I try?
