Review: Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip in Chilly Chili

Nothing cold about this Chilly Chili – the color is just hot, hot, HOT!

Hello, friends! This one is a little overdue, as I was supposed to put this up after the Pegacorn & Wisp review – oops! Needless to say, Christmas is literally TOMORROW and things have been a tad busy in the house, with my younger sister and nephew home for the holidays, and my grandma arriving today, it’ll be a very full house!

This Ultra Matte Lip arrived along with Pegacorn and Wisp. I made a look around this liquid lipstick, and needless to say, it brought out the grunge in me!

Chilly Chili is part of Colourpop’s limited edition 90s-themed shades; along with Bad Habit, More Better, Instigator, and First Class. (I originally wanted to purchase More Better, but it was out of stock at the time.)

As per usual with my Colourpop purchases, I bought these from Maquillage PH (Facebook|Instagram). Lately, I’ve been seeing sellers with slightly cheaper prices for Colourpop orders, but honestly, MPH’s payment scheme just can’t be beat. Trust me on this!

Don’t know what this means? Neither do we, but you can rock this muted plummy brown anyway!

application tips: Step 1: Make sure your lips are bare and dry! Step 2: Apply matching lip pencil for a precise and perfected application. Step 3: Apply Ultra Matte Lip with the applicator or your favorite lip brush. **For smoothest finish always exfoliate your lips first! This thin and lightweight formula glides onto the lips smoothly and leaves SUPER intense pigment-rich colour with a bold, ultra matte look. It’s very long wearing and completely kiss proof!
The Ultra Matte Lip comes in the usual clear liquid lipstick tube, but with a silver twist cap.  A portion of the top part of the product tube, under the screw-on portion is silver as well. Holographic print for the label name also adorns it. The shade name and the batch code is on a sticker at the base as well.

Chilly Chili is described as a muted plummy brown. I don’t really see the plummy part of this, but to me it’s more of a brown-based muted brick red. (Is that confusing?) The first thing I thought of when I tried this on was.. “I gotta do a grunge look. I just have to.”

And I did!

I should have put on a fake nose piercing or something. Or a choker.

I even found a plaid shirt lying around (which belongs to my dad, haha) and wore it, just to take selfies. Hahaha! I like how my hair was this day, so I just let it loose and disheveled across my shoulders. Thank goodness for naturally curly hair!

I went for a neutral, slightly smoked out eye. I did a very light contour and didn’t even put any highlighter or blush – the lips are the focus of this look. And really, Chilly Chili can hold its own!

PROS:

  • Smooth, opaque application.
  • Waterproof, and quite resistant to food and drink – I had a peanut butter sandwich and when I checked in the mirror, it looked pretty much the same, except for a bit of wear at the corners of my lips.
  • Good value for price.
  • ..and I just really love this shade, I do.

CONS:

  • I don’t know if it’s just for this particular color or batch that I received, but the product itself was very liquid. I would have preferred a slightly creamier or mousse-like formula.

Overall, Chilly Chili is a really good liquid lipstick for any time of the year. Since we don’t have the four seasons here i the Philippines – we only have wet or dry season, heh – it’s not hard to find a time to wear this rich, chocolatey shade. (And anyone who knows me knows that I love my chocolate!)

xx Yani
